A Daily Prayer for Christian Unity

Lord Jesus,
who prayed that we might all be one,
we pray to You for the unity of Christians,
according to Your will, according to Your means.

May Your Spirit enable us
to experience the suffering caused by division,
to see our sin,
and to hope beyond all hope. Amen.

This text, adapted from a prayer by Abbé Paul Couturier,
is said in all offices celebrated in the Community Chemin Neuf.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

For when attending the Eucharist of another Christian Church, whose discipline does not allow you to receive

Lord Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though you have already come,
I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.

Lord Jesus, may we be one
as you and the Father are one,
that the world may believe the Father has sent you.

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your Apostles:
'I leave you peace; my peace I give you'.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church;
and grant her the peace and unity which is according to your will;
who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
